Large poster wishing Taiwan on its ‘National Day’ have come up outside the Chinese Embassy complex in New Delhi’s Chanakyapuri.

Taiwan celebrates its National Day on 10 October.

This development comes just days after the Chines Embassy, which claims the country of Taiwan as its territory, had issued a press release asking the Indian media to “not violate the One-China principle”.

“We hope Indian media can stick to Indian government’s position on Taiwan question and do not violate the One-China principle,” it had said.

Taking an oblique potshot on China, the Ministry of External Affairs said India has a free media “that reports on issues as it sees fit”.

The posters appear to have been put up by Delhi BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga. The BJP leader, who contested from the Hari Nagar seat in the 2020 Delhi elections, has been very outspoken on the issue of China and Taiwan.

Sending a message to China a month after the standoff in eastern Ladakh made headlines, two BJP leaders — Meenakshi Lekhi and Rahul Kaswan — had virtually attended the swearing-in ceremony of Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen.

Amid tensions with China along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh, many in India have called for closer relations with Taiwan.
