Some Hindu groups protested in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, over problematic social media posts about Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan, according to officials.

The outfits demanded a shutdown, alleging posts aimed to glorify the two rulers.

The protest at Kolhapur's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk turned violent as protesters ransacked shops and vehicles, seeking action against those behind the posts.

Officials reported police using lathi-charge to disperse protesters. Other reports included clashes between groups from different parts of the town.

Mahendra Pandit, Superintendent of Police in Kolhapur, reported that after organisations called for a bandh, members gathered at Shivaji Chowk and some threw stones, leading police to use force to disperse them.

CM Eknath Shinde is in touch with police officials and has urged citizens to keep calm.

"Investigation is underway and action will be taken against those found guilty," Shinde said.

Officials said Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis is also overseeing the situation in his role as Deputy Chief Minister.

"There is no forgiveness in Maharashtra for those who praise Aurangzeb. Police are also taking action. At the same time, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that peace is maintained," Fadnavis said.

Police claim increased security in the city to prevent incidents.
