An atmosphere of tension has enveloped Virat Nagar in the Bommanahalli area of Bengaluru after Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) corporator C R Ramamohan Raju took down a green Islamic flag from a house in the area, reports Deccan Chronicle.

Raju removed the flag while campaigning for the BJP candidate for Bangalore South, Tejasvi Surya. Apparently when he saw the green flag with a crescent and moon symbol on it, he mistook it to be the Pakistani flag and took it down.

The house from which the flag was taken off belonged to one Syed Sharif; Raju asked Sharif’s mother to use a green coloured flag and not a Pakistani flag. Suporters of the corporator chanted slogans such as ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Vande Mataram’ during the course of the incident.

Local Muslim leaders condemned the incident and an election official from the area S S Nakuk said that a suo-moto case would be registered over the matter.

Sharif and local Muslim leaders have asked for Raju to issue an apology to them.
