In an interesting development today a spokesperson of the Janata Dal (United) Party has told The Hindu’s Nistula Hebbar that their party will vote for the opposition’s candidate for Vice President Mr Gopalkrishna Gandhi. This is despite the fact that the party broke away from the Mahagathbandhan and joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party to form a new government in Bihar last week.

Explaining the decision the JD(U) spokesperson claimed that the party has chosen to back Mr Gandhi in deference to a pre-existing commitment. The spokesperson also claimed that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had originally pushed for Mr Gandhi as the opposition’s candidate for Presidential polls but the Congress prevailed over others in putting up Mrs Meira Kumar.

This decision to not back the BJP candidate Venkaiah Naidu in the Vice Presidential polls will not be reflected in other voting decisions, it was clarified. The JD(U) will back the BJP and National Democratic Alliance in both the houses of Parliament in other issues.
