Vice President (VP) M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday (23 January) pressed on the need for history textbooks to highlight the contributions of national icons like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Veer Savarkar among others, reports Asian News International (ANI).

Lamenting that nation's first union home minister Patel and freedom fighter Savarkar were not given due recognition for their immense contributions, VP Naidu underscored, "Veer Savarkar was given two life sentences and imprisoned for 10 years in the infamous Cellular Jail, where he was subjected to inhuman treatment."

VP Naidu expressed disgruntlement over the attempts from certain sections to belittle Savarkar's contribution to the nationalistic cause and the freedom struggle. He was speaking at an event to unveil a statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

It should be noted that Netaji's statue was unveiled on his 123rd birth anniversary. The statue is located at Raj Bhavan in Tamil Nadu State's capital city of Chennai. Remembering his immense contributions to the nation VP Naidu talked about how Netaji unfurled the tricolour in Port Blair on 30 December of 1943 and declared Andaman and Nicobar Islands the first Indian territory to be free of the British rule.
