An NGO, Justice for Rights, has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Delhi High Court seeking regulation of content shown on online platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and others.
It claimed that due to lack of censorship over online content, the platforms were showing shows that were full of 'vulgarity, religiously forbidden and morally unethical'.
Alleging that the content of several shows on the online platforms violated provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act, the NGO has sought an immediate court order to remove legally restricted content from these portals, as reported by India Today.
A notice was earlier issued to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology by the Bombay High Court on similar lines.
The matter is scheduled to be heard by the high court on 14 November.
Earlier, a West Bengal Congress leader had flied a complaint against ‘Sacred Games’ which is aired on Neflix. The complaint was filed as the show had allegedly portrayed former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in a derogatory manner.

Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
