A committee appointed by the government has suggested several changes in the governing of Waqf board properties in order to curtail litigation. A report was presented to Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi by the panel which reviewed Waqf Properties Lease Rules 2014.

The report recommended a slew of changes to bring clarity in rental norms. It asks for increasing the lease period of properties being used for agricultural purposes from one year to three years, and from five to 10 years for those being used as shops. Furthermore, it rationalises security deposit payable on properties.

Extending lease renewal for ten years as a one-time concession, the report provides relief to occupants of properties uninterruptedly from 1995 or before

Naqvi has said that the report shall be implemented after his ministry examines it.
