In celebration of the auspicious Thaipusam, an estimated 400,000 people congregated at the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple at Batu Caves for penance and prayers. A sea of devotees carrying milk pots and bearing kavadis climbed up the 272 steps leading to the limestone cave that Hindus hold sacred, reports The Sunday Daily.

The spectacle also drew tourists along with the worshipping Hindus to the Batu Caves.

“I religiously come to Batu Caves every year during Thaipusam and try and relive my experiences with my deceased wife. I am all about work, and am now detached from relationships,” said Albert Tancreadi, a 35-year-old IT executive from the US.

The highlight of the celebration included a silver chariot lit with colourful light-emitting diodes (LED) that carried the idol of Lord Muruga from the Sri Mahamariamman temple at Jalan Tun HS Lee Kuala Lumpur to the Batu Caves.

“We managed to bring down the power consumption, which was 70 amps previously, to merely 12 amps this year. This goes a long way as we have managed to save fuel in our generator. In the past, we had to refill halfway through the journey,” said Ravichandran Perumal, a Sri Subramaniar Swamy volunteer electrician of more than 20 years.

The chariot is set to leave Batu Caves at 4 pm tomorrow (January 22) and is expected to reach Mahamariamman temple at Jalan Tun HS Lee Kuala Lumpur at 3 am on the day after (January 23).
