Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (19 November) announced the repealing of three farm laws.

He added that the Constitutional process for repealing of the three farm laws will begin next month during the next session of the Parliament.

In his address to the nation on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti, PM Modi said, "Today I want to tell everyone that we have decided to repeal all three farm laws."

He also highlighted his govt's measures to benefit small farmers.

"I have experienced farmers' difficulties, challenges from very close quarters in my five decades of public life," PM Modi said.

The goal of the three farm laws was to empower farmers, especially small farmers, he said.

The agriculture budget has risen by five times with over Rs 1.25 lakh crore being spent annually, PM Modi said.

He also appealed to the protesting farmers to end their protest.

Farmers have been protesting the government's three farm laws since it had passed the Farmer's Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 last year.

PM Modi also announced the formation of a committee to promote zero budgeting based agriculture, to change crop pattern as per the changing needs of the country and to make MSP more effective and transparent.

The Committee will have representatives of the central government, state governments, farmers, agricultural scientists, and agricultural economists.
