The Bardhaman railway station in West Bengal will be renamed in honour of freedom fighter and revolutionary Batukeshwar Dutt, according to a statement made by the Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, reports PTI.

Rai made the remarks while visiting Dutt’s post-independence home in Patna, where he had settled after being released from imprisonment in the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Dutt, along with Bhagat Singh, had been tried by the colonial authorities for bombing the National Legislative Assembly in Delhi. The latter had been given the death sentence, while the former was sentenced to life imprisonment. Both were members of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association.

Born in a village in Bardhaman district, Dutt had become closely involved with the revolutionary movement after graduating from high school. He was also associated with other notable freedom fighters such as Chandrashekhar Azad.
