West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar’s tour to the post-poll violence affected areas in the state was heckled by a group of people in Dinhata at Cooch Behar.

The individuals blocked Dhankar’s car and raised slogans against him as the 69-year-old got down and confronted the miscreants personally.

The Governor expressed disbelief at the breakdown of the security in the state, as several BJP workers and supporters were harassed physically by TMC goons after the Mamata Banerjee-led party’s victory in the assembly elections.

Dhankar claimed that the common people of the state feared the police and were scared to approach them even though their houses continued to be looted.

“People have left their houses and are living in jungles. Women tell me that they (goons) will come there once again and there is such failure of security before the Governor. I'm shocked at it. I can imagine what the people here must be going through,” the Governor told ANI.

He added, “This is a total collapse of rule of law. I could have never imagined this. I have seen the fear of Police in the eyes of the people, they are scared to go to Police, their houses were looted. I'm really shocked, this is the destruction of democracy.”

Soon after the poll results Governor Dhankar had summoned Director General West Bengal Police and Kolkata Commissioner in the wake of rising post poll incidents of arson, looting and violence along with political killings. He had also urged them to take all steps possible to restore law and order in the state.

The BJP workers and their dispensation has been at the receiving end of major political violence launched by alleged TMC workers. This has led to the death of at least six BJP workers and left many others injured. The properties of BJP workers and party workers have been vandalised across the state.
