Western Railway To Install 4K Cameras Equipped With Face Recognition, Night Vision Tech For Better Surveillance

Western Railways (WR) suburban stations running from Virar to Churchgate will soon be installed with 2,900 new 4K CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition and night vision technology to effectively tackle crime. The installation is projected to cost Rs 64 crore, as reported by Mumbai Mirror.
The current system is equipped with 1,600 old cameras using which the authorities barely notice movement, let alone see people’s faces. The new cameras will be staffed by 20 experts who will be located at the Mumbai Central station.
WR’s principal security commissioner, A K Singh said that the funds for the new camera network have been sanctioned. The tendering process is underway and the installation and the work on the integrated control room at Mumbai Central by June 2019.
The AI system will is set to fed with a database of people with a record of crimes such as mugging, harassment and mainly Phatka gangs.
A record number of 1,800 cases related to Phatka gangs and mugging have been registered with WR in the past six months between Churchgate and Virar, and most of them were mobile theft. Over 60 per cent of the cases were recorded at Dadar, Andheri, Borivali, Bandra and Virar.
