Who Would Have Thought? Fuel Prices Are Cleaning Delhi’s Air

Consumers may be disgruntled due to high petrol and diesel prices, but a positive impact has been the push to embrace Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Delhi-NCR, reported Times Of India.
In the past year, the rate of conversions has doubled from 1,500 to 3,000 a month, tracing the upward curve of fuel prices. Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs), which are the highest contributors to air pollution, are shifting lanes due to the combined effect of high fuel prices and green tax.
Delhi’s sole supplier of CNG, IGL concurs with the doubled values in the past year. Around 250 trucks are running on CNG, with 2,500 LCVs added in the past year. Daily CNG sales have risen by 15 per cent as CNG offers 60 per cent savings against petrol and 40 per cent against diesel.
IGL has to come up with innovative steps to tackle the exponential rise in demand, one of which is the franchise approach. Also, IGL is setting up 50 stations across NCR and providing discounts in time slots during the day.
Long queues around railway and airport stations have been reported due to the slow turnaround of vehicles as Petroleum & Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has capped the pressure at 200 Bars/Kg, even though IGL systems are rated at 250 Bars/Kg.
