Will Power To Wheel Power In Bengaluru: Soon, Women From Slums To Be Trained As Taxi Drivers

Sukanya, a cab driver from Bengaluru, lost her husband a couple of years ago and had to find means to support her family. After she underwent training to become a cab driver, she believes she can be a role model for several women in the city.
An NGO called Action AID collaborated with DXC Technology to train 15 women in Bengaluru to become drivers. So far, about 60 women from the city and also Jaipur are beneficiaries of the training programme. One among the other women drivers who have been trained was sweeping the streets for a living, while another worked at a garment factory.
Women from incense sticks manufacturing units and slums have been trained and now have a chance to lead a better life. Deccan Herald quoted Malar, who works as a programme manager for Action Aid as saying, “The city has very few women cab drivers. There are several job opportunities for them and this will also help them earn more money. Cab aggregators Go Ink and Taxshe will hire them.”
Furthermore, she added that, “Our primary objective is to provide an opportunity to women from deprived communities to explore alternative livelihoods so they can lead a dignified life. We’re proud of the women who’ve taken the brave step to break the gender stereotype and serve society by ensuring safety for women and girl children,” Deccan Herald reported.
