Women In Indian Army: Over Two Lakh Apply For 100 Female Jawan Vacancies In Military Police

With the Indian Army having opened up recruitment for the position of Jawans to women for the first time in history, two lakh female candidates have applies for the 100 vacancies released for them in the Corps of Military Police (CMP), reports The Times of India.
The applications for the posts have been made through an online portal. The Indian Army eventually plans to recruit up to 1,700 women in the person below officer rank (PBOR) category. Women are already allowed to apply for officer vacancies in non-combat roles, and many serve in the Army’s Medical Corps, Judge Advocate General’s Department and Corps of Military Intelligence, among other branches.
"With 100 of them being inducted every year, women will eventually constitute 20% of the CMP. The functional efficiency of the first women provost unit in the Territorial Army, in turn, will decide whether more such units should be raised," an officer stated.
The Army is also looking to create a ‘Mahila Provost Unit’ (Women’s Provost Unit) as part of the Territorial Army, although the official approval for the same is still pending.
