Former Australia PM Tony Abbott
During his visit to New Delhi, former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott strongly backed India’s bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council, saying that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country had moved from being introspective for a long time to making sure that it’s voice was heard throughout the globe, reports ANI.
“If there is one country which, by dent of its military strength and its size and economic potential, has a claim to be on the United Nations Security Council, it is India," he said.
He added that although he could not speak of what the official position of the Australian government was on this issue, he personally was quite sympathetic to the idea of India being on the Security Council.T
“The world needs two democratic superpowers, not just one," he stated.
He also took aim at China for “bullying its neigbhours” and also highlighted the human rights atrocities within the country against Falun Gong practitioners, Uighurs and other minorities, reports The Guardian.
In remarks critical of the current Australian government’s policy regarding China, he commented that his country had “put too many eggs into the China basket”
