The Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi has succeeded in convincing fellow judges to avoid leaves on working days and deliver justice in Supreme Court, The New Indian Express has reported. In line with the suggestion of CJI, judges have stopped attending public functions on working days.

According to the CJI, the practice of attending conferences and public events hampers the functioning of the Supreme Court and causes delay in the hearings. Ranjan Gogoi had also requested fellow judges to plan holidays in advance and coordinate with their colleagues to ensure smooth functioning of the Supreme Court.

Courts in India face high burden of cases. According to the National Judicial Data Grid, there are 4.30 crore pending cases in 42 High Courts. In Supreme Court itself 55,946 cases are pending.
