Yogi Govt Allows UP Police To Commence Trial Of 67 People Booked For Violence During Anti-CAA Stir In Bijnor

Chief Minister (CM) Yogi Adityanath led Uttar Pradesh (UP) Government has sanctioned commencement of trial against 67 people booked in state's Bijnor district over the charge of participation in the 20 December 2019 clashes during protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), reports Times of India.
Following the violence during the protests, the state's police administration had jumped into action and filed four FIRs in which 67 people were booked. These included the former chairman of Nagar Palika. Most of these accused are out on bail.
The cases were filed under several sections of Indian penal Code (IPC) which include 153-A and 295-A.
The IPC's section 153-A pertains to promotion of enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language et cetera, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony. Meanwhile, sector 295-A covers injuring o b r defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class.
It should be noted that in a bid to begin trial against people booked under these sections of the IPC, a prior approval of the state or Central government is mandatory.
