Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, on Saturday (19 July) inaugurated the 435 megawatt Gorbea Solar Power Project in Rajasthan.
Developed by Zelestra India and completed in under eight months, the Gorbea project spans 1,250 acres and is backed by a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement with the Solar Energy Corporation of India.
It is expected to generate 755 gigawatt hours of clean electricity annually — enough to power approximately 1.28 lakh homes — while reducing carbon emissions by 7.05 lakh tonnes per year.
“With every megawatt we generate, we are not just producing power, we are building a New India,” the minister said, adding that the project reflects the speed and scale of change.
With 35.4 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity already installed — including 29.5 gigawatts from solar and 5.2 gigawatts from wind — Rajasthan now sources nearly 70 percent of its total power capacity from renewables.
The minister hailed the state for its proactive role in India’s renewable energy growth.
Over 700 local workers were employed during construction, aiding livelihood generation and local skill development.
The supporting infrastructure, including a 6.5 km transmission line and on-site substation, was completed within five months.
The Gorbea facility uses advanced TOPCon bifacial mono PERC solar modules and over 1,300 robotic cleaning units to ensure maximum efficiency.
Joshi also encouraged pilot testing of next-generation technologies like Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells in Rajasthan, citing ongoing R&D at IIT Bombay and the state’s high solar irradiance potential.
