Hindon Airport Expansion
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has asked the Ghaziabad administration to provide 9 hectares of land at Sikandarpur for expanding the Hindon civil airport, while submitting a report of a survey conducted by it., Hindustan Times reported.
At present, the Hindon civil airport occupies about 22,050 square metres, or roughly 2 hectares.
According to the officials, the airport, which uses the Indian Air Force base’s runway at Hindon, is running at optimum capacity for flights and passenger footfall, making expansion necessary.
“We have about 25 cities connected with 50 flights and a daily footfall of more than 5,000 passengers. An expansion plan is under discussion at AAI’s highest level. For now, we have asked district officials to provide nine hectares of land to meet rising demand,” Umesh Yadav, the civil airport’s director, was quoted as saying by HT.
The terminal, which opened in October 2019, caters to passengers from Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh.
It connects to cities including Kolkata, Chennai, Goa, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Jammu, Varanasi, Patna, Ahmedabad, Indore, Adampur, Nanded, Kishangarh, Ludhiana and Bathinda.
Ghaziabad MP and airport advisory committee chairperson Atul Garg said the expansion plan includes more parking bays.
Garg added that he had earlier asked AAI officials to cut some flights to prevent operational disruptions.
“For the expansion plan, nine hectares of land from Sikandarpur village will be procured. Initially, we will try to purchase land directly from farmers. Later, if they deny, then we can go in for land acquisition,” Garg was quoted as saying by HT.
Officials said the airport currently handles aircraft of varying sizes, including 20-seater, 80-seater and 186-seater planes.
