The voting for the Delhi elections has begun today (5 February) with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) aiming to secure a third term while the BJP is eyeing to dethrone the Arvind Kejriwal led party, and the Congress looking for a resurgence in the national capital.
More than 1.56 crore voters are set to participate in the elections to decide the fate of 699 candidates in 70 constituencies, India Today reported.
The voting is being conducted with strict security measures in place after a campaign filled with intense debates about governance, accusations of corruption, concerns about voter list accuracy, law and order, and various promises of free services and benefits.
The AAP, under Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership, is relying on its track record in governance and its welfare programmes to retain power.
The BJP, aiming to control Delhi after 25 years, has run an aggressive campaign, accusing AAP of corruption and misgovernance.
To facilitate a smooth voting process, extensive security measures are in place.
The Election Commission has deployed 220 units of paramilitary forces, 35,626 members of the Delhi Police, and 19,000 home guards.
They have also designated nearly 3,000 polling stations as sensitive, implementing additional precautions like drone surveillance.
