United States-based news agency Associated Press (AP) has courted controversy with its coverage of the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on Tuesday (22 April), in which over two dozen people, mostly tourists, were killed.

Netizens have accused the agency of omitting key facts and softening terminology around the terror attack.

Journalist Sreemoy Talukdar took to X to highlight that AP in its reportage on the Pahalgam terror attack failed to mention that the tourists killed in the attack were Hindus—an omission he called glaring, given the nature of the targeting.

"In a series of articles, AP fails to mention even ONCE that the tourists who were selectively gunned down by jihadis were Hindus, even quoting the group that has assumed responsibility (failing to mention LeT link) to say they were "no ordinary tourists"," he said.

AP’s choice to frame the incident as a “terror attack” in scare quotes, attributing the phrase to police, was also slammed by Talukdar.

He also highlighted that the outlet quoted the group claiming responsibility but made no mention of its links to Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based terror organisation.

Tagging the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Talukdar asked, "What steps are you going to take against AP? As a concerned, taxpaying citizen of India, pained beyond measure by the massacre in Pahalgam, I demand an answer".

"Will you let this abominable chicanery by AP pass?" he added.
