Adani Gets Supreme Court Go-Ahead For Rs 36,000-Crore Redevelopment Project In Mumbai's Motilal Nagar, Residents’ Appeal Rejected

The Supreme Court on Monday (28 July) dismissed the Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by residents of Motilal Nagar in Mumbai, clearing the path for Adani Properties Pvt Ltd to proceed with the Rs 36,000-crore redevelopment project, reported The Indian Express.

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) had appointed Adani as the developer for redeveloping the 143-acre Motilal Nagar colonies in Goregaon (West).

The residents had challenged the Bombay High Court’s 6 March 2025 order approving MHADA’s plan to redevelop the area through a Construction and Development Agency (C&DA). On 25 July, the High Court had also rejected their review petition.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for MHADA, argued that the land belongs to MHADA and has been granted special project status by the state.

The redevelopment, covering Motilal Nagar 1, 2, and 3, aims to rehabilitate 3,700 tenements across 5.84 lakh sq metres. Adani will hand over 3.97 lakh sq metres of developed space to MHADA, including nearly 33,000 new houses and 987 sq metres of commercial area for non-residential tenants.

Earlier this month, MHADA signed an MoU with Adani Group to execute the project, set for completion in seven years. The Adani Group had emerged as the highest bidder.
