The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has appointed former chief minister Atishi as the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly.
This decision was taken during a legislative party meeting on Sunday (23 February), a day ahead of the beginning of Delhi Assembly's first session on Monday.
Atishi, who represents the Kalkaji constituency, previously served as the Chief Minister of Delhi from September 2024 to February 2025.
“In the legislative party meeting today, it has been unanimously decided that Atishi will be the leader of the opposition in the Delhi Assembly...In challenging times, Atishi has served the people of Delhi as the CM...AAP will fulfil the responsibility of a healthy opposition," AAP leader Gopal Rai was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
"I express my gratitude to AAP's National Convenor @ArvindKejriwal ji and the legislative party for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading the Aam Aadmi Party’s legislative group in the Delhi Assembly. The people of Delhi have assigned us the role of the opposition, and as a strong opposition, we will ensure that the BJP government fulfills all the promises it has made to Delhi’s citizens," she said.
"During the elections, Modi ji guaranteed Rs 2,500 per month to all women in Delhi. We will make sure that the BJP government fulfills this promise. The Aam Aadmi Party will raise public issues with full force in the Assembly. The fight for the rights of Delhi and its people will continue," she added.
