News Brief
Amit Shah and M K Stalin.
At a rally in Madurai on Sunday (8 June), Union Home Minister Amit Shah came down heavily on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and said that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would come to power in the state in 2026.
He accused the DMK of widespread corruption, referring to the illicit liquor deaths and a Rs 39,000-crore TASMAC scam. Labelling the regime as a “100 per cent failed government, Shah alleged that Central funds meant for Tamil Nadu have been diverted. He challenged Chief Minister M K Stalin to publish a list of the poll promises fulfilled by his party and criticised the absence of Tamil-medium higher education, including engineering programs.
As per a report by NDTV, Shah also spoke about Operation Sindoor and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus on Atmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defence. He mentioned that India's response of striking terror hubs deep inside Pakistan received a lot of support amongst people in the state and sparked conversations around some of India's programmes like the Kaveri engine.
The DMK responded sharply. Dismissing BJP's chances in the state, DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said in an interview to ANI, "people of Tamil Nadu would never accept the BJP into the state because the BJP is their main enemy. He accused the party of undermining the state’s development and education system.
