A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court has presented a divided opinion on Tuesday (16 January) regarding the plea filed by former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, seeking to quash the FIR against him in the skill development scam case.

The bench has now referred the matter to the Chief Justice of India, urging consideration for placement before a larger bench.

Naidu had faced arrest in connection with the multi-crore AP Skill Development Corporation scam on 9 September 2023.

Subsequently, he had secured bail from the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

According to the additional DG of CID, "A government corporation was specifically established for the purpose of skill development, with the proposal being put forward by private individuals... The money trail is clearly visible."

The investigation delved into how the money was funneled into shell companies and other related aspects to uncover the complete chain of events.

However, the split verdict has introduced a layer of complexity to the legal proceedings, prompting the bench to seek the Chief Justice of India's guidance on whether the case should be escalated to a larger bench for further consideration.
