Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has announced that the Bhogapuram Greenfield Airport near Visakhapatnam is now expected to be completed and operational by June 2026, six months ahead of the original December 2026 deadline, Times of India reported.
The announcement came during the minister’s site inspection on Tuesday (8 April).
While the overall progress stood at 49 per cent in Nov 2024, it has now reached 71 per cent, with earthworks fully completed, Naidu said.
Several major components of the project are nearing completion.
Around 97 per cent of the runway, 92 per cent of the taxiway, 60 per cent of the terminal building, 72 per cent of the air traffic control tower, 43 per cent of ancillary buildings, and 37 per cent of the main approach roads have been completed.
To support local employment and ensure community participation, the minister revealed that a dedicated skill development centre would be established.
"A local skill development centre will be set up to provide training in airport-related and other commercial activities, thereby generating job opportunities," he noted.
Additionally, the hospitality infrastructure around the airport is also taking shape.
"A Taj Group hotel is also expected to be operational in time for the airport's launch," said Naidu, adding that the terminal interiors will "highlight the rich culture, traditions, and art of north coastal AP."
