Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that former Tamil Nadu BJP state chief K Annamalai will be given national responsibilities while continuing his key role in Tamil Nadu politics, reported India Today.
Shah also asserted that the NDA will form the Tamil Nadu government in 2026.
In an interview with a regional daily, Shah emphasised Annamalai's dual role, stating he will play an important part in state politics and also get national-level responsibilities.
This is not the first time Shah has hinted at bigger role for Annamalai.
In April, after Annamalai stepped down as state BJP president, Shah praised his tenure, posting on X: “As the President of the Tamil Nadu BJP unit, Shri K Annamalai Ji has made commendable accomplishments... The BJP will leverage Annamalai Ji's organisational skills in the party's national framework.”
“The NDA alliance of the BJP and the AIADMK is going to form a government in Tamil Nadu next year,” Shah said, adding that the Chief Ministerial candidate will be from the AIADMK.
He did not name AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami directly.
Shah's remarks signal the potential for the national party to become a stakeholder in Tamil Nadu's governance, a shift not seen since Dravidian parties gained dominance in 1967.
