In a tragic hit-and-run in Mumbai's Worli on Sunday (7 July), a speeding BMW hit a couple on a two-wheeler, killing the woman.

According to a report from The New Indian Express, the luxury car dragged the woman for 100 metres.

The Mumbai Police has stated that the accident occurred as the woman and her husband were returning home from Sassoon Dock after collecting fish.

At around 5:30 am, near Atria Mall, a speeding BMW hit their bike from behind. The impact threw the couple off the bike, causing them to land on the bonnet of the luxury car.

While the husband managed to jump off the moving car, the woman, identified as Kaveri Nakawa, was dragged for 100 metres.

Bystanders rushed the couple to a hospital, where the woman was declared dead on arrival. The husband is currently receiving treatment.

"The hit-and-run incident that happened in Mumbai is unfortunate. I have spoken to the police, and strict action will be taken as per the law. Everyone will be treated equally," he told the media.

According to the same report, the car belongs to Rajesh Shah, a leader of Maharashtra CM Shinde's faction of Shiv Sena, and was driven by his son, Mihir Shah.

Consequently, Rajesh Shah has been detained by the police. Additionally, Rajesh Shah's driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, has also been detained.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray visited the Worli Police Station and met with the victim's husband. He called for the swift arrest of the accused and urged that politics be set aside to ensure strict action in hit-and-run cases.

"Visited the Worli Police Station today and met with senior police officers investigating the hit-and-run case that occurred in Worli today. I will not go into the political leanings of Mr. Shah, the accused of the hit-and-run, but I hope the police will act swiftly to catch the accused and bring him to justice. Hopefully, there will be no political refuge by the regime," he wrote on X.

This incident comes less than two months after a similar hit-and-run case in Pune involving a minor, which resulted in the death of a young couple.
