News Brief
AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal.
Days after Punjab Police personnel were removed from Arvind Kejriwal's personal security detail, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief has alleged that Gujarat Police personnel have been added to his security cover.
Questioning the motive behind the move, Kejriwal raised concerns over the Election Commission’s directive.
Ahead of the Delhi polls on 5 February, the Punjab Police on Thursday (23 January) was directed by the Election Commission and Delhi Police to remove its personnel from Kejriwal’s security cover, India Today reported.
On Saturday (25 January), Kejriwal shared a Gujarat Police order on X (formerly Twitter), expressing discontent.
"Read this order of Gujarat Police. The Election Commission has removed Punjab Police from Delhi and deployed Gujarat Police. What is going on?" he wrote.
Gujarat Home Minister Hits Back
Responding to Kejriwal's remarks, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi clarified that the deployment followed standard EC procedures.
BJP Criticises Kejriwal's Remarks
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused Kejriwal of politicising the issue.
BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya said the AAP leader's comments reflected nervousness about the upcoming Delhi elections.
“Is this your first election or are you nervous about losing? It is standard practice to deploy state police forces for election duties. Even for Delhi elections, police forces from 12 states and union territories, including Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Maharashtra have been mobilised. Additionally, Punjab Police was withdrawn from your personal security. It is worth noting that you and Delhi are not synonymous,” Malviya wrote on X.
The EC has mobilised 220 companies of police from various states to assist in poll duties for the Delhi elections, including maintaining law and order, interstate border checks, and securing critical polling stations.
