North-East India Economy
The northeastern region of India, comprising eight states, achieved an impressive 16 per cent growth in direct selling during the 2023-24 fiscal, recording a turnover of Rs 2,109 crore, an increase of Rs 255 crore from the previous fiscal, according to the Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA).
The announcement was made at the second Northeast Direct Selling Conference and Expo on 21 January.
The region accounts for 8.7 per cent of the Rs 21,282-crore direct selling industry turnover in India and provides self-income opportunities to over 4.2 lakh direct sellers.
Assam emerged as the top-performing state in the region, contributing Rs 1,009 crore in sales, a 13 per cent year-on-year growth, and holding a 4.7 per cent share of the national market.
The state’s direct selling network is powered by over 2.4 lakh sellers.
Nagaland led this group with Rs 227 crore, followed by Mizoram (Rs 156 crore), Arunachal Pradesh (Rs 78 crore), Tripura (Rs 72 crore), Meghalaya (Rs 19 crore), and Sikkim (Rs 5 crore).
Notably, Mizoram (31 per cent), Sikkim (25 per cent), Nagaland (22.7 per cent), and Manipur (20 per cent) recorded robust growth, driven by the resilience of the direct selling industry during challenging times, such as nearly two years of ethnic conflict.
“The direct selling industry also contributes about Rs 300 crore annually to the exchequer of northeastern States, reinforcing its role in the region’s development,” the IDSA stated in its study.
The IDSA, a self-regulatory body, plays a pivotal role in facilitating the direct selling industry in India and is a member of the World Federation of Direct Selling Associations, representing 60 associations globally.
