Assam Triple Murder A 'Love Jihad' Case, Says Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Wednesday (July 26) that the triple murder in Golaghat a case of 'love jihad', a term used to describe the rising instances of Muslim men seducing Hindu women in order to convert them.

Sarma assured that a chargesheet would be filed within 15 days to expedite the trial of the accused.

During his visit to the family of the victims, Sarma said, "This is a clear-cut case of love jihad. The deceased family was Hindu, while the accused belongs to the Muslim community. He initially presented himself with a Hindu name on Facebook... The woman learned to use drugs when the couple had fled to Kolkata."

The victims have been identified as Sanjeev Ghosh, Junu Ghosh, and Sanghamitra Ghosh, according to reports.

Their bodies were discovered on Monday, bearing multiple injuries that indicated they were attacked with sharp weapons.

The Chief Minister revealed that the accused, a 25-year-old mechanical engineer named Najibur Rahman Bora, was a drug addict involved in trafficking illegal substances.

"The woman was administered injectable drugs, which led to her becoming pregnant. She suffered torture when she went to live at the accused's house and later returned to her maternal home," Sarma further said.

The Chief Minister expressed concern about cases where women are influenced into marriage by Muslim men hiding their religious identities.

After murdering his wife and her parents, Bora surrendered to the police in the Golaghat district of Upper Assam.

The Chief Minister also took to Twitter to reaffirm the government's commitment to creating a society with zero crime, ensuring that no criminal will escape justice.

During his statement, the Chief Minister mentioned that he had received a letter from Ankita, the sister-in-law of the accused. However, he admitted that he had missed it due to the high volume of correspondence he receives, especially since the letter was sent during the lockdown period caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

An investigation is currently underway, as stated by the Assam Director General of Police, Gyanendra Pratap Singh. Singh has assured that a thorough chargesheet would be prepared against the perpetrator/s and abettors.

The investigation will also examine any lapses in previous cases, including the validity of the marriage certificate presented in the previous investigation, he added.

According to the police, the accused had previously served jail time for assaulting his wife. After his release, quarrels resumed and eventually led to the murder of his wife and parents-in-law.

The accused had surrendered at the Golaghat Police Station with his nine-month-old son.
