Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday (31 March) laid the foundation stone for the state’s second ropeway, connecting Biswanath Ghat to Umatumuni River Island, and inaugurated an automatic driving testing station in the district.

According to report by The Assam Tribune, the Rs 60 crore ropeway project is expected to be completed within 18 months. “In a year and a half, the people of Biswanath will have the state’s second ropeway after Guwahati,” Sarma announced.

The ropeway will transport passengers in just three minutes one way, significantly boosting connectivity and tourism in the region.

Earlier in the day, Sarma inaugurated an automatic driving testing station, built at a cost of Rs 17 crore, to assess the fitness of buses and trucks operating in the area.

He highlighted its importance in reducing road accidents, saying, “Every commercial vehicle must undergo a fitness check twice within eight years, while private vehicles must do so every 15 years. This station will facilitate these checks, and the certification details will be accessible through the government’s Vahan portal.”

Additionally, the Chief Minister announced plans for a medical college and a full-fledged sports stadium in Biswanath. He also proposed the establishment of a BSc Nursing College, a GNM school, and a paramedical institute to support skill development.

Reaffirming his government’s commitment, Sarma declared, “Our government stands by its promises. We deliver on our commitments and will continue to do so in the future. I will either fulfill my promises or die trying.”

He also confirmed that work on the much-anticipated Kanaklata University in Gohpur would begin within three months.

“When all these projects—be it the Rs 12,000-crore Gohpur-Numaligarh underwater tunnel, the ropeway, the Kanaklata University, or the medical college—come to fruition, Biswanath will emerge as a major attraction,” Sarma concluded.
