Bareilly authorities launched a demolition drive on Saturday (4 October) against multiple illegal structures across the district, including a banquet hall owned by one of the accused in last week’s violence over ‘I Love Muhammad’ row, reported The Indian Express.

The Bareilly Development Authority (BDA), supported by a strong police presence, tore down Raza Palace in Jakhira, owned by Nafees Khan.

Police arrested Nafees (65) and his son Farhan (32) last Wednesday, alleging their role in mobilising crowds during the clashes.

Officials also conducted a flag march urging residents to maintain peace.

BDA Vice-Chairman Manikandan insisted the demolition was a routine procedure, not linked to unrest.

“The baarat ghar belonged to Nafees. A notice was issued to him in 2024 that the structure was illegal. A demolition order was issued on 17 May, 2025. As per directions of the Supreme Court and High Court, we gave him 30 days to file an appeal. Now, there is no appeal pending,” he said.

BDA teams inspected Jagatpur, Old City, and Faiq Enclave, removing unauthorised constructions and encroachments on government land.

District Magistrate Avinash Singh termed the action part of regular drives to address waterlogging caused by illegal structures.

SP Anurag Arya said police arrested 83 individuals, registered 10 FIRs, and formed a Special Investigation Team to probe the incident, adding that certain WhatsApp groups formed prior to the clash are under investigation.
