The Bengaluru Business Corridor (BBC) project has received a significant boost with a written confirmation from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO) that it will provide 100 per cent funding for the Rs 27,000-crore project.
On Monday (4 November), the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) appointed eight new land acquisition officers to expedite the land acquisition process for the ambitious 73-kilometre project.
In addition, plans have been made to establish a new office at Yelahanka, as well as three more offices near the 76 villages from which land will be acquired for the project.
A meeting to review the project's progress was held on Monday (4 November) with the Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister, L.K. Atheeq, who also serves as Chairman of the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed to implement the BBC, and Vice-Chairman N.A. Harris.
The meeting, which included senior officials from the BDA and the Deputy Commissioners of Rural and Urban Bengaluru, focused on streamlining the land acquisition process and assessing the project's status.
One of the challenges facing the project is the slow handover of government land. A government order (G.O.) issued in 2022 mandates the transfer of 193 acres of land to the BDA for the project at no cost. However, the process has moved at a slow pace, and officials have urged the Deputy Commissioners to expedite the land handover to avoid delays.
Compensation for affected landowners is another key concern. The land in the affected areas has been partitioned over time among multiple families, which means compensation needs to be provided to a large number of owners—over 4,000 landowners are expected to receive compensation for the land acquired.
While compensation amounts will be in line with the new Land Acquisition Act, the complexity of identifying all rightful recipients has increased the number of people needing compensation.
To make the process more convenient for landowners, the BDA has decided to set up new offices closer to the acquisition sites, so residents do not have to travel to the BDA head office for compensation-related matters.
The BDA aims to complete the land acquisition and compensation processes within the next six months.
Business Corridor Project
The Rs 27,000-crore project is set to cover 2,560 acres of land and will connect Tumakuru Road to Hosur Road, crossing key thoroughfares including Doddaballapur Road, Bellary Road, and Old Madras Road.
The BBC is designed to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity around the city’s periphery. It will pass through 10 major junctions and over 100 minor intersections. The plan includes 16 flyovers at strategic points such as Hesarghatta Road, Old Madras Road, Whitefield Road, Channasandra Road, and Hosur Road, among others.
This ambitious project is set to feature 16 flyovers, 10 overpasses, and 12 underpasses, enhancing the city's transportation network. Additionally, the plan includes bridges over seven water bodies, including prominent ones like Chikkatogur Lake, Gunjur Lake, and Jarakabande Lake, further facilitating seamless connectivity.
To tackle traffic intricacies, the project incorporates six cloverleaf-type over bridges, providing a solution for efficient crisscrossing without congestion.
The main carriageway, boasting eight lanes, will be flanked by service roads on both sides, with a broad median reserved for possible future integration with the metro project.
The project covers 65.95 km between Hosur Road and Tumakuru Road, with an additional 3.4 km near Madanayakanahalli and 4.08 km near Hebbagodi to link existing roads seamlessly into the PRR network.
