The first prototype of the distance-to-go (DTG) train, which has been manufactured in China, has arrived at Bengaluru’s Peenya depot, marking a significant milestone in the city’s metro service expansion.

This six-coach DTG train is expected to alleviate congestion on the Purple Line (Whitefield to Challaghatta) and Green Line (Silk Institute to Madavara).

The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has said that the prototype will undergo extensive testing before passenger operations begin.

These tests include static and electrical circuit evaluations, followed by dynamic tests on the mainline to ensure safety and efficiency.

The train is part of a larger order placed with China’s CRRC Corporation for 216 new coaches to support Bengaluru Metro’s Phase 2 expansion project, which spans 73.95 kilometres across the Purple, Green, and Yellow Lines.

Of the total, 126 coaches (21 six-coach trains) are allocated for the Purple and Green Lines, while 90 coaches (15 six-coach trains) are designated for the Yellow Line, connecting RV Road to Bommasandra.

While the prototype was delivered from China, the remaining 20 six-coach trains for the Purple and Green Lines will be manufactured at TRSL’s Uttarpara facility.

BMRCL expects the first DTG train from TRSL to arrive by the last quarter of this year, with all trains for the Purple and Green Lines scheduled for delivery by the first quarter of 2027.

Meanwhile, TRSL has already dispatched its first driverless trainset for the Yellow Line, which is set to arrive at the Hebbagodi depot by 20 January.

The Yellow Line, connecting the Electronic City corridor, is expected to commence operations soon with two trains.

Officials expects this development to provide much-needed relief to commuters in one of Bengaluru’s busiest regions.
