Bengaluru’s much-delayed Yellow Line has finally crossed a major milestone, with the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) receiving the long-awaited Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) report, paving the way for the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) inspection, The New Indian Express reported.
The certification was reportedly issued on Thursday (18 July) by an Italian government agency in collaboration with Siemens India Ltd- Siemens AG, who are responsible for the signalling system for the Yellow Line.
The report faced significant delays due to technical issues identified in the dataset, necessitating a round of software updates before the report could be finalised.
“We have received the ISA report. Following this, we will be going forward with the next step to call the CMRS for inspection,” Yashwant Chavan, Chief Public Relations Officer at BMRCL was quoted as saying by TNIE.
The Yellow Line, part of Namma Metro’s Phase 2 expansion, was originally expected to be operational by mid-2023.
Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya had met Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi last week to urge expedited approvals for the Yellow Line’s commissioning.
He called on the Centre to accelerate CMRS clearance and also advocated for broader Transit Oriented Development (TOD) policies.
“We must prioritise moving people over cars,” Surya said during the meeting, adding that India should aim to have at least five cities among the world’s most livable over the next decade.
He also emphasised the need for standardisation in Metro train design to streamline manufacturing and reduce rollout times across the country.
