The Karnataka government is planning to invest Rs 1 lakh crore in road infrastructure to tackle the worsening traffic congestion in Bengaluru.
The announcement was made by state's Deputy Chief Ministry D K Shivakumar at the Karnataka Global Investors Meet, Hindustan Times reported.
The proposed project reportedly include a 40-km twin tunnel, estimated to cost Rs 42,500 crore, and a 41-km double-decker corridor integrating road and Metro rail, with an investment of Rs 18,000 crore.
The government also plans to construct a 110-Km elevated corridor with a budget of Rs 15,000 crore and develop 320 km of buffer roads with an investment of Rs 5,000 crore.
Shivakumar did not discuss potential expansions of mass transit options like the suburban rail or Metro buses.
Addressing Bengaluru’s rapid urban growth, he pointed out that the city's population had surged from 70 lakh two decades ago to 1.4 crore today, with 1.1 crore registered vehicles.
He emphasised that the Bengaluru Business Corridor (Peripheral Ring Road) would play a crucial role in alleviating congestion.
