Bengaluru showed a slight improvement in global rankings of the world’s most congested cities by Amsterdam-based location technology specialist TomTom.

In 2022, the city was ranked as the second most congested, but it has now dropped to the sixth position.

However, Bengaluru continues to be the most traffic-congested city in India.

TomTom's data reveals that in 2023, the average time to travel 10 kilometers in Bengaluru was about 28 minutes and 10 seconds, a slight decrease from 2022's 29 minutes and 9 seconds which had made Bengaluru the second slowest city worldwide.

The average speed in Bengaluru stood at 18kmph, slower than any Indian city, Hindustan Times reported.

Other cities with slower traffic speeds include Dublin (16 km/h), Milan (17 km/h), Lima (17 km/h), and Toronto (18 km/h), as reported by TomTom.

This comes after Bengaluru had recently surpassed New Delhi as the Indian city with the highest number of private vehicles.

The city is known for its extensive traffic jams and has around 23 lakh private cars, which exacerbate the congestion.

As per the report, close to 2000 new vehicles get registered in Bengaluru every day.
