News Brief
US President Joe Biden
US President Joe Biden has suggested that Hamas's recent terrorist attack on Israel might be connected to the announcement of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) during the G-20 Summit in New Delhi, as per reports by The Economic Times.
The ambitious IMEEC project aims to foster regional integration with a network of railroads. While the President expressed his conviction, he clarified that this analysis is based on instinct and not on concrete proof.
Biden's comments mark the second time in less than a week that he has mentioned the IMEEC as a potential factor behind Hamas's attack.
The corridor consists of two segments: an eastern corridor connecting India to the Gulf region and a northern corridor connecting the Gulf region to Europe.
Biden has been engaging with regional leaders to foster hope and better prospects in the region, emphasising the need for greater integration for Israel while also recognising the aspirations of the Palestinian people as part of the future.
Israel responded to unprecedented attacks by Hamas on 7 October, resulting in a significant loss of life and triggering a massive counter-offensive.
