In a major pre-poll relief for power consumers in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday (17 July) announced free electricity for all domestic consumers using up to 125 units per month, reported Hindustan Times.
The new scheme will be effective from 1 August, benefiting 1.67 crore families across the state.
“We have been providing electricity at a cheaper rate since the start. We have now decided that from 1 August 2025, that is, from the July bill itself, all domestic consumers of the state will not have to pay any money for electricity up to 125 units,” Kumar posted on social media platform X.
The announcement comes just months before the state is set to hold assembly elections, likely in October or November, although the Election Commission has not yet announced the official dates.
Alongside this announcement, the Chief Minister also unveiled a solar power initiative.
For extremely poor families, the state will fully cover the installation costs under the Kutir Jyoti scheme. Other families will receive adequate financial support. This project will roll out over the next three years.
Earlier on Wednesday (16 July), Kumar directed the education department to identify teaching vacancies and expedite the Teachers' Recruitment Exam (TRE)-4 process.
“The education department has been instructed to identify vacancies of teachers in government schools and initiate the process to conduct the TRE-4 examination at the earliest. The state government has already clarified that the benefit of 35 per cent reservation for women in appointments will be given to those who are residents of Bihar,” he stated.
TRE-4 will reportedly open opportunities for over 1.20 lakh teaching aspirants, with BPSC conducting the exam across all levels before the model code of conduct takes effect.
