The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday ( 23 August) said it would not send any representatives to the Joint Committee of Parliament (JPC) formed to examine three new Bills seeking to remove central and state ministers facing allegations of corruption or serious offences, The Indian Express (IE) reported.

Calling the panel a “farce,” the party said it opposed the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill 2025 at the stage of introduction.

“We oppose the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill at the stage of introduction, and in our view JPC is a farce. So, we aren’t nominating anyone from AITC,” the party said in a statement, IE reported.

The three Bills under review are the Government of UTs (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill 2025, and the J&K Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025, introduced in Lok Sabha by Home Minister Amit Shah earlier this week. The Bills were referred to the JPC amid Opposition protests.

TMC’s parliamentary leader in Rajya Sabha Derek O’Brien accused the government of turning JPCs into “stunts.”

He said such “committees skewed towards the ruling majority because of their numbers in the House”.

O'Brien added that there is "no consensus on the final report" in almost ever JPC.

He said that whenever an Opposition MP proposes important amendments, they are are defeated in the committee by a show of hands.
