BJP Inches Closer To National Leadership Transition As State Poll Officers Named In Maharashtra, Uttarakhand And Bengal

The BJP on Friday (27 June) appointed election officers to oversee state unit president polls in Maharashtra, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.

This development comes as the party prepares to elect a new national president to succeed J P Nadda, whose three-year term began in early 2020 and was extended to ensure a smooth leadership transition.

As per a report by Times of India, these appointments mark part of the groundwork for the upcoming organisational elections.

According to the BJP’s constitution, the national president can be elected only after elections are held in at least half of the states and union territories plus one.

Key appointments remain pending in major states such as Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana.

The issue of electing a new national president has appeared intermittently in the news cycle, with several tentative timelines proposed, though none have materialised so far.

BJP may reportedly be aligning the timing of the appointment with upcoming state assembly elections scheduled for later this year and early next year.
