Sharing a showcause notice issued by TANGEDCO to BGR Energy regarding the expansion project of the Ennore Thermal Power Station (ETPS), which said, “no appreciable progress of works is visible at site even after a lapse of 450 days from the new zero date i.e., 09.03.2022”, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president, K Annamalai stated that his party’s allegation that the contract was given to the company by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for "personal monetary gains" was vindicated.

While the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) government had cancelled the letter of intent in April 2021, the DMK government reinstated the letter of intent in March 2022.

Annamalai also requested the Madras High Court to order a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the reinstatement of the letter of intent.

In a post on Twitter, Annamalai wrote, “In a letter written by TANGEDCO to BGR Energy recently, TANGEDCO threatened to terminate the contract given to BGR Energy for the 1 x 660 MW ETPS Expansion Project. @BJP4TamilNadu exposè stands vindicated today. The reason for this showcase notice is that BGR, despite being given a year and a new zero date, has made no progress in the execution of the work. To our dismay, even the preliminary works at this site remain pending. #BGRScam

"How could anyone expect a sick company like BGR Energy to execute a ₹4442 Crores? But the corrupt DMK did back this sick company for their personal monetary gains. BHEL Trade Unions have filed a case in the Madras High Court seeking a CBI probe into reinstating the contract with BGR Energy.

"Considering the loss caused to the Exchequer, we request the Hon Madras High Court to kindly order the CBI to probe the Corrupt DMK Government for burning the tax payer’s money and favouring a shell company which is incompetent & financially unstable."

The company had sent a legal notice to Annamalai and Selva Kumar the vice-president of the BJP's industrial wing demanding Rs 500 crore in damages after the allegations.
