Jammu Kashmir Elections 2024

As the results of the Jammu Kashmir Elections 2024 have unfolded, the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) secured 43 per cent vote share in Jammu, despite trailing in a number of seats it contested.

The party won 29 seats, while its main rival, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKN) bagged 42 Seats, with its alliance partner Congress securing just six seats.

In addition, the BJP is a runner-up in Jammu and Kashmir elections in nine seats.

BJP’s highest voter share came from constituencies like Jammu West, Jammu North, and Basholi where it garnered 60 per cent+ vote share, signifying its strong presence in the Urban Areas whereas its weakest performance in Jammu came from Inderwal (17.7 per cent vote share) and Banihal (6.9 per cent vote share).

Several exit polls last week gave an edge to the alliance of the National Conference and Congress, in Jammu and Kashmir, with the regional party emerging as the single-largest party.

The BJP was expected to secure between 20-25 seats only, however, the party performed much better securing 29 seats and the highest vote share of 25.63 per cent among all parties.

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has a total of 90 seats.

The Hindu-majority Jammu region has 43 Assembly constituencies with the remaining 47 seats in the Muslim-majority Kashmir region.

The Congress, which was hoping to regain its lost ground in the Jammu division, has not been able to stop the BJP as it surpassed its 2014 tally of 25 seats.

Jammu was once the stronghold of the Congress, but it has lost its ground in the region since 2014.

The BJP has scored a hat-trick of victories in both the Lok Sabha seats in Jammu since 2014.
