The Border Security Force (BSF) has accused the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) of “denial and delay” in accepting illegal Bangladeshi migrants during the three-day Director General-level conference in Dhaka from 25-28 August, reported The Hindu.
At the meet, the BSF also pressed for the immediate construction of a single row fence to curb cross-border crimes and illegal migration.
However, the BGB has opposed the project at several locations after Bangladesh’s political changes in August 2024.
While the BGB claimed it was creating awareness among locals not to cross into India, Indian officials said it had not taken concrete steps like erecting fences.
The BGB also raised objections to India’s “pushback” of illegal Bangladeshi migrants, Myanmarese nationals, and even Indians, claiming around 2,500 people had been pushed into Bangladesh.
Following the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack, Indian states launched a crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi migrants and sent them back to Bangladesh to avoid lengthy legal procedures.
At a press conference in Dhaka, BSF DG Daljit Singh Chaudhary said, “...exfiltration is happening, people are returning through proper channels, they are also coming back through gaps.... whosever we find (at the border) we immediately hand them over to BGB.”
Government data show undocumented migrants leaving India through the eastern border tripled in 2025 compared to 2024.
The BSF also flagged attacks on its personnel, trans-border crimes, and misreporting by Bangladeshi media.
Both forces agreed to work jointly on sensitising border residents, facilitating riverbank protection, and completing pending border infrastructure projects.
