In a shocking cross-border incident, a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was allegedly abducted by Bangladeshi nationals early on Wednesday (4 June) near the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district.
The incident unfolded in the Chandni Chowk area, near the BSF camp in Sutiar, Nurpur, as the trooper was reportedly trying to thwart an infiltration attempt, reported PTI.
BSF sources said the jawan, who was on routine patrol duty near Kathalia village, was overpowered and taken across the international boundary by miscreants believed to be from Chapai Nawabganj district of Bangladesh.
“He was abducted by Bangladeshi nationals and was held captive, but was released within a couple of hours after we flagged the issue with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). The jawan is now with us and doing fine,” a senior official from the BSF’s South Bengal Frontier was quoted as saying by PTI.
Officials confirmed that he was handed back to Indian authorities and is currently under observation.
A video that went viral on social media purportedly shows the jawan tied to a banana tree for several hours in a remote Bangladeshi location. However, the footage is not verified.
Authorities have launched a detailed inquiry into the circumstances of the incident. Meanwhile, the BSF is reportedly reviewing its operational protocols in the region. An official statement is expected after preliminary findings.
