Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP), issued a stern warning to the United States (US) President-elect Donald Trump over his controversial remarks about annexing Canada.

In a video shared on X, Singh declared, “Our country (Canada) is not for sale. Not now, not ever.” Singh emphasised the pride Canadians take in their nation and their readiness to defend it.

Singh said that Canadians are proud people, they are proud of their country and ready to "fight like hell to defend it.” Referencing Canada’s support during the devastating Los Angeles fires, Singh highlighted the spirit of neighbourly assistance.

“Right now, with the forest fires ravaging homes, Canadian firefighters showed up. That is who we are. And we show up and support our neighbours,” Singh added.

However, Singh warned of retaliation if the US imposes tariffs on Canada under Trump’s administration.

Trump has openly discussed the prospect of Canada becoming the 51st US state, claiming widespread Canadian support.

On his platform Truth Social, he wrote in early December 2024, “Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State.” Later, on Christmas, he spoke about the benefits of the merger of Canada with the US.

“Their taxes would be cut by more than 60 per cent, their businesses would immediately double in size, and they would be militarily protected like no other country anywhere in the World.” he listed.

Earlier this month, Trump floated the idea of a US-Canada merger, claiming it would eliminate tariffs and enhance security.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau rejected the notion, stating, “There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.” Trudeau further stressed the mutual benefits of the Canada-US partnership, particularly in trade and security.
