Surrounded by Pakistan and China, Ladakh “cannot afford violence” and people trying to vitiate the atmosphere in the Union Territory will not be spared, Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta said on Friday (3 Octobet), reported Deccan Herald.

He urged the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) to resume dialogue with the Centre.

“Dialogue opens ways. Everything will be resolved if we sit together,” he added.

Gupta announced a magisterial probe into the 24 September violence in Leh, which left four dead and many injured.

He expressed satisfaction over the improving situation, noting that authorities lifted curfew restrictions for a full day on Thursday after phased relaxations.

He stressed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita remains in force across Ladakh, prohibiting gatherings to prevent a repeat of the violence.

“Many people, including those who provoked the mob violence through their statements and speeches, have been detained. There must be a provision for justice for innocents and punishment for culprits,” Gupta said.

Highlighting Ladakh’s strategic importance, he added, “There are anti-national elements and we cannot afford violence… Our priority is to maintain the unity and integrity of the country.”
