The Central Government has reportedly directed the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed extension of the Yellow Line to Narela, according to Vijender Gupta, Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly.
Gupta disclosed on Wednesday (8 January), that he had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 27 December 2024, advocating for the extension.
On 6 January, the DMRC informed Gupta via letter that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) had instructed the corporation to prepare the DPR. The DMRC declined to comment on the development.
Gupta also highlighted that the Delhi BJP Legislative Party, under his leadership, had submitted a memorandum to Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar on 6 December 2024, urging the extension.
The Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro currently connects Millennium City Centre in Gurugram to Samaypur Badli in Delhi.
While an extension to the Siraspur metro depot has already been approved by the Central Government, areas such as Siraspur, Kheda, Alipur, and Narela remain outside the metro network.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Gupta emphasised the benefits of extending the metro line from Badli-Siraspur to Narela.
Connecting Siraspur to Narela via Kheda Kalan and Alipur would also help alleviate traffic congestion and optimise resource utilisation, according to Gupta.
The proposed extension aligns with efforts to improve connectivity in Delhi's outer regions and reduce traffic bottlenecks.
Residents of areas such as Narela, a growing residential and industrial hub, have long demanded better public transport options to address commuting challenges.
The DPR will provide a comprehensive plan for the project, including technical, financial, and logistical aspects, paving the way for further approvals and implementation.
Once completed, the extension will enhance connectivity for Delhi’s northern periphery and facilitate smoother commutes for its residents.
